Description:
Since 1969 the Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center has grown in its ability to provide services to the mentally ill, those with intellectual disabilities, and persons suffering from chemical dependency in the 5 county area. The START Program is an all-female, sixteen-bed residential drug rehabilitation program located in the western part of Walker County, serving clients between the ages of thirteen through eighteen. The START Facilityprogram is operated under the auspices of the Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center and certified through the Alabama Department of Mental Health. Consumers live in a supervised treatment home setting where responsibility for self is emphasized in a structured environment. Each consumer is expected to participate in all aspects of the program, and is responsible for completing all aspects of the program including clinical assignments and basic living skills. START provides a mix of services including individual, group, and family therapy, drug education, treatment films, didactic groups, basic living skills, case management, written assignments, school, and recreation. All consumers are referred for aftercare services upon completion of residential care. The length of stay is approximately 60 days—dependent of progress of the negotiated individualized treatment plan.
