Description:
KANZA Mental Health and Guidance Center, Inc. is a private not-for-profit agency licensed by the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services as a participating community mental health center. KANZA was formed in November 1963 and by 1971 was contracted to serve the citizens of Brown, Doniphan, Nemaha and Jackson Counties in Kansas. It is governed by a volunteer board of 14 members appointed by County government. KANZA offers a wide array of behavioral health services including psychotherapy services, psychiatric medication evaluation and management services, psychological evaluation, critical incident stress debriefing, and speakers on a variety of topics. The wide array of services also includes mental rehabilitation services for children and youth experiencing a serious emotional disorder and adults who are experiencing a severe and persistent mental illness. Overall, KANZA believes that persons can achieve recovery from mental illness and recovery can occur at various levels based upon the individual. The Center works closely with schools, primary healthcare providers, the courts, corrections and other community agencies to deliver our behavioral health care. Additionally, the agency participates with the community to form the Brown County prevention Alliance to promote a healthier drug-free community for youth and their families. Educational services through Mental Health First Aid classes are provided to promote a better understanding of the effects and impact of mental illness and improve understanding and reduce the negative effects of stigma. KANZA services are funded by a number of resources, which include fees collected from third party payers as well as client fees based on a sliding fee scale, state funds to provide crisis services and other services to persons who are uninsured and dealing with severe mental illness, and county funding. The Center fulfills the critical role of a mental safety net provider and works closely with numerous community partners to provide emergency assessment, referral and crisis intervention services. KANZA’s clinical staff are available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.
