Description:
Pathfinders of San Diego is a long term, residential, social-model men’s recovery home that has been treating those suffering from alcoholism since 1950. Located in beautiful San Diego, Pathfinders provides a safe and pro-social environment that is beneficial to the healing process. Using a bio-psycho-social approach to treatment of alcohol addiction, pathfinders provides our residents an affordable, long term reintegration solution while acquiring the tools to achieve long term sobriety and a healthy, productive and independent life. Since structure and productivity is often lost in active addiction, it is an integrated and integral component of the pathfinders program. Daily activities such as chores, peer group support, recovery and house meetings, literature study and addiction education groups are more highly structured in the initial phase of the program and taper over the course of residence through transition. As residents repair and develop independent living skills and reintegrate into the social and occupational facets of life, they learn how to utilize their recovery tools in daily functions and manage a well-balanced sobriety. Our addiction and alcohol education classes provide residents with awareness of the physiological changes that occur through substance dependence and define specific tools to help expedite the brain’s recovery. Although neurological repair is a welcomed and anticipated process of recovery, its symptoms are uncomfortable and encourage relapse. Educating residents on the brain’s recovery process and corresponding symptoms normalizes the experience and allows room for the sufferer to endure the temporary discomfort in exchange for the benefits of a full recovery. Specific recovery nutritional guidance, harmful effects of substance use, stress management, relapse prevention and many other topics are also covered. Additionally, our 12 Step literature study is designed to translate the basic text of 12 Step into applicable and immediate tools and educate residents on the culture, traditions and rich history of the 12 Step modality of treatment. This increases confidence and comfort when attending and joining outside recovery meetings and developing a sober support network in the 12 Step community. What makes pathfinders different from many other residential settings is “the men who have come before.†Pathfinder’s recovery home has tremendous alumni support that unselfishly “give back†and share their time with our residents. Not only does this support restore hope, their success is evidence that recovery is possible and their compassion and empathy encourages positive outcomes. Many of our alumni involve themselves with 12 Step sponsorship which creates a mutually supportive relationship. Our long term, social-model modality is built on the foundational philosophy of recovery; one alcoholic helping another. Residents are able to relate and identify with one other, establishing trust. Once this trust is established a fellowship is formed which creates a safe environment which encourages and inspires insight. Our residents begin to support each other while embarking on their journey of recovery and their daily successes restore character, self-esteem and confidence. They soon find that their successful experience of recovery becomes their greatest asset as they help others do the same.
