Details: Abuse of substances such as alcohol, drugs or tobacco can lead to increased risk of injuries, accidents and/or physical and mental health problems. Although quitting is difficult, Veterans do not have to do it alone. The Addictions Treatment Program at Truman VA consists of a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses and social workers who provide consultation and individual and group services for Veterans struggling with addiction to alcohol or drugs. The main goal of the Addictions Treatment Program is to help Veterans develop a fulfilling lifestyle free from drugs and alcohol. This involves a comprehensive treatment approach that focuses on improving emotional well-being, developing a positive social network, learning to cope with cravings and risky situations, obtaining satisfying, gainful employment (or, if the Veteran is unable to work, figuring out how to spend time in productive ways such as volunteer work) and exploring a variety of healthy recreational activities.
