Details: Addictive Disease is a medical condition, not a mental illness. It should be treated with a caring and compassionate approach and with a comprehensive treatment plan. The patient, and whenever possible, the family and friends should all understand the plan. We treat many patients for both primary care and addiction. Patients in recovery are less likely to be prescribed medications that put their sobriety in jeopardy by our clinicians. Well meaning practitioners who do not truly understand that “addiction is a diseaseâ€, rather than a lack of willpower, may give inappropriate prescriptions to addicts in recovery. A wide variety of “non-addicting†medications can often be used to treat insomnia, anxiety disorders, panic disorders, depression and other similar conditions. Addicts are often ashamed and embarrassed to tell the whole truth. Our unique practice allows for patients to feel comfortable to express their personal needs without shame or guilt. Because of the overlap between Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine we serve as a referral resource for many local providers in Pain Management. We use a variety of opioid and non-opioid medications to treat chronic pain. For our patients in recovery, we offer several pharmacologic options for relapse prevention. Current medication options for relapse prevention, approved by the FDA, include Antabuse®, Naltrexone, Suboxone® , monthly injections of Naltrexone, and Campral®.
