Details: SAGE’s Trauma and Addiction Recovery (STAR). The STAR Center of the SAGE Project opened in 1998 with funding from the San Francisco Department of Public Health, Community Behavioral Health Services. The goal of the program is to reduce risks of harm, substance abuse and usage, and the effects of trauma in order to help participants’ master essential competencies and progress toward self-sufficiency. STAR serves adult women and male to female transgendered women who suffer substance use and trauma disorders resulting from commercial sexual exploitation, abuse, intimate partner violence, involvement in the sex industry, and other associated traumas. To be eligible for STAR services, a consumer must be 18 or older, have a documented substance abuse problem, history of trauma and/or family violence, and/or other problems related to use of alcohol or drugs. A brief screening confirms eligibility and once established the consumer agrees to participate in services and creates a plan with the case manager and an assessment of needs. The assessment collects information about the consumer including a detailed history of trauma and substance use. Following the assessment, the consumer and case manager identify goals and objectives that reflect the consumer’s aspirations for growth. SAGE conducts screenings daily between 9:30 and 11:00 am; however other times are available by appointment. STAR services include individual and group formats. SAGE services align with principles of harm reduction. SAGE will work with other community-based partners to provide the most comprehensive services to individuals.
