Through the learned personal skills and family support at the heart of Ada S. McKinley’s counseling programs, we build lasting change in the lives of vulnerable children and adolescents, and strengthen their families to create stronger resistance to violence and negative circumstances in their communities. In our programs we counsel children and adolescents dealing with problems caused by mental illness or substance abuse, by violence and gangs in their neighborhoods and schools, or by the personal trauma of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Our approach engages families in providing care and empowers young people to overcome challenges and focus on life success. Each month, nearly 300 children walk through Ada S. McKinley’s doors—the vast majority come from the poorest and most underserved communities in Chicago. Our services are provided 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, and are tailored to meet the needs of the child and family. Once initial contact and assessment of needs are addressed, families can expect to receive services within their communities from qualified staff, skilled in providing personalized care, and utilizing the most current evidence-based practices. Licensed mental health professionals can take advantage of the site’s Community Education Center, which offers online, interactive courses on a variety of mental health and behavioral topics. Professionals who need Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to maintain their licenses can access the site, and, for a small fee, enroll in over 200 trainings on clinical topics in child and adolescent mental health, adult mental health, developmental disabilities, substance abuse and more.
