Website: http://www.dickb.com
Description: Why this site by Dick B. on the history of A.A., and the people and organizations involved with successful Christian Recovery efforts which preceded and influenced Alcoholics Anonymous? We believe you should hear the whole A.A. history story if you are to receive and pass on the spiritual tools that A.A. offers to those who still suffer. But our primary focus is on “the rest of the story.” The fact is that there are countless untold, ignored, discarded, distorted, or omitted pieces of A.A. history that offer opportunities to still-suffering alcoholics and addicts to be lifted out of the mire, to seek the same cure that early AAs received, and to pursue a transformed life anew. The many resources here will supply what has been missing. They will highlight what AAs in misery, in confusion, and in repeated relapses can do if they learn and know what the original A.A. pioneers did in depending and relying upon the power and love of God. And in finding or rediscovering God through His Son Jesus Christ on the path found in the Bible.

The pioneer program was thoroughly and accurately reported to philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. by his associate Frank Amos. The Frank Amos report explicitly stated how “medically incurable” alcoholics had achieved “permanent cures” utilizing this practical program. The cures and the astonishing success rates of yesteryear are not even remotely paralleled today. Freedom Ranch Maui Mission has been and is: (1) To research, study, report on, publicize, and enable utilization of the exact methods and sources employed by the Akron A.A.’s pioneer program; (2) To demonstrate conclusively to our school and learning audience the potential for outstanding efficacy today through a simple and practical utilization of the early principles; and (3) Through school classes; online education, radio and TV and and analog presentations.; as well as lectures, retreats, seminars, and conference addresses, to educate and train leaders, teachers, and the afflicted themselves about the early A.A. program of recovery, rehabilitation, and Bible principles.

Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services
Location: Honolulu, HI - 96819
Contact Phone: (808) 791-9400
Website: http://www.kkv.net/
Description: Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services (KKV) was formed by the Kalihi Valley community as a non-profit corporation in 1972, in response to the absence of accessible and appropriate health care services for the valley’s low-income, Asian and Pacific Island immigrant population. KKV’s original staff consisted of one coordinator and four outreach workers who combed the valley connecting residents in need with existing services, following the motto “Neighbors being neighborly to neighbors.” Medical and dental services were first provided out of two renovated military trailers in the back parking lot of Kalihi Baptist Church. Today, KKV employs 180 staff who are fluent in 20 Asian and Pacific Island languages and dialects, and work out of nine locations throughout the valley—including two of the largest public housing communities in the State of Hawai‘i, a 12,000 square foot health center, a 4,000 square foot Elder Center (the former site of the main clinic) and 100 acres of leased State Park land at the back of Kalihi Valley. KKV serves over 10,000 community members each year. KKV works to foster health in the broadest sense—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual—returning to the root of the word itself: “health” comes from an Old English word meaning “wholeness, being whole, sound or well.” A healthier Kalihi Valley, envisioned by the community leaders who founded KKV 40 years ago, is an inclusive community in which neighbors help to heal neighbors, and people see themselves as part of a larger whole, connected to each other, to their culture, and to their shared land. Our Mission: Together we work toward healing, reconciliation and the alleviation of suffering in Kalihi Valley, by serving communities, families and individuals through strong relationships that honor culture and foster health and harmony.

Our compassionate, holistic approach to recovery centers around each participant or “haumana” (student), with the belief that anyone can recover from addiction. We have locations in Honolulu, Hilo and Puna. Approximately 400 persons are served daily, with more than half of these on Hawai`i Island. Our haumana seek recovery from addictions to substances including heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription drugs, alcohol, marijuana, a combination of these drugs and other drugs of abuse. We know that both addiction and recovery do not happen in isolation, and that family members, children and loved ones are also in need of healing and recovery. While addiction can destroy even the most successful of families, the recovery process can help to deepen family members’ strength and understanding. Kū Aloha provides programs with staff that are creative, loving and committed. Research and state-of-the-art knowledge and interventions are combined with the wisdom of our culture to offer unique services to those seeking recovery and healing. Website: http://www.habilitat.org
Description: For over 40 years, Habilitat has been motivating the unmotivated. It has long been recognized as one of the nation’s foremost residential substance-abuse treatment programs. With meager resources, Vinny Marino founded Habilitat on January 27, 1971, starting with only eight people housed in a small home in Kailua, Hawai`i. Vinny was determined to pursue his uncompromising commitment to address the growing epidemic of individuals with substance abuse problems and other anti-social behaviors. Over its long history, residents have included those from the local community as well as individuals from across the country and abroad. An integral component contributing to Habilitat’s success is its vocational training programs, with such diverse options as food services, masonry, landscaping, carpentry, telemarketing, administration and information technology. These on-the-job situations offer residents opportunities to cultivate and refine the principles that Habilitat emphasizes: self-respect, accountability, concern for others, constructive criticism, self-discipline, lifelong learning, and strong work ethic. Since its modest beginnings, Habilitat grew to accommodate 200 residents at its new oceanfront facility in Kane`ohe, Hawai`i. Consistently, through demonstration and positive results in helping thousands of individuals and their families, Vinny Marino maintained the highly acclaimed Habilitat. With increased responsibility generated by growth in Habilitat’s resident population, Habilitat initiated ways to remain self-sufficient. Fundraising projects such as Christmas tree sales, catering, national book sales, music production and our annual luau, auction and benefit concert help to maintain Habilitat’s goals of autonomy and self-reliance. Over four decades after its inception, Habilitat continues its mission to help people overcome their problems with substance abuse and other anti-social behaviors.
