Description: New House, Inc. (NHI) is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization that has been providing recovery and counseling services to the residents of San Bernardino County since 1978. NHI has a unique capacity to provide services for men/women with children. The children accompany the parents while in treatment. Many of the children have special needs as a result of exposure to the dysfunctional lifestyle of their substance-abusing parents. The majority have been abused and/or neglected, and the remainder are “at risk” of the same. The turmoil and chaos these children have witnessed in their short lives will continue to have a negative impact on their lives if they do not get the help that they need. These children are in need of developmental assessments, counseling, and individualized therapy. In response NHI is in the process of expanding services to include a therapeutic childcare center for these children. Structured activities will be scheduled for the children. In addition, the therapeutic childcare center will employ a team of highly skilled professionals to help the children overcome the sometimes debilitating effects their parent’s substance abuse has had on their lives. The focus of the program overall is to substantially improve the family structure and break the intergenera-tional cycle of addiction and dysfunction.
Foothill Aids Project
Location: San Bernardino, CA - 92408
Contact Phone: (909) 884-2722
Website: http://www.fapinfo.org
Description: FAP was founded in 1987 by a group of concerned residents who were driven to help their friends and loved ones stricken by HIV/AIDS who had nowhere else to turn and could no longer work full-time. In a group member's living room, this band of Samaritans pooled their own resources to help with buying groceries, rides to the doctor, paying utility bills, and feeding pets. As the HIV/AIDS epidemic evolved, so did FAP services. At the start of the epidemic, HIV was considered a death sentence. Services were designed to provide emergency measures to keep people housed, relatively healthy, and comfortable. Thanks to advances in medication and treatment, people are living much longer with HIV/AIDS. FAP's services focus on HIV as a chronic disease that needs regular and pro-active management, much like diabetes, hypertension, and others. FAP now offers a full spectrum of integrated programs and services in three counties that empower clients to manage their own long-term health goals. Integrated treatment and chronic care management, paired with stable housing planning and outreach provide many tools for people living with HIV/AIDS to live longer, healthier, and more stable lives.
