A child is chemically dependent when he uses drugs or alcohol as a crutch to avoid problems or emotional pain and cannot deal with these problems without drugs. Chemical dependency can happen to any child-regardless of social or economic background, academic standing, or how good their home life is. Chemical dependence has an impact on the whole family. Everyone in the family suffers when a member has a problem with drugs or drinking. Feelings of rage, shame, guilt, and helplessness, are common; feelings that are powerful enough to interfere with normal living. Families in this predicament become “stuckâ€-and their members may simply stop growing. Pregnant and parenting teens are especially vulnerable. |
