Contact Phone: (907) 452-8251x
Website: http://www.tananachiefs.org/
Description: It is our belief that for Alaska Natives today, alcohol and drug use became a toxic way of coping with a loss of traditional Native values, cultural patterns, identities, relationships, and unresolved trauma. There are eligibility requirements which must be met prior to the acceptance of any individual into the camp. By using Native culture and traditional values as our foundation, our goal is to help people help themselves as they heal from trauma, choose healthy lifestyles and overcome substance use. The Old Minto Family Recovery Camp is an Athabascan alternative to substance abuse treatment; a place to begin healing in a traditional setting. In addition to daily sessions for group and individual counseling, residents gather firewood, haul water, fish and hunt. This approach emphasizes traditional values and strengths, and is compatible with all Alaskan Natives. Clients stay for a 35 day session, enough time to get a good foundation for recovery. Our intent is to provide families and individuals with the skills that will help them live healthy and substance free lifestyles within their own communities. We do this with respect for our Native culture and traditions, as well as other cultures, as seen through the eyes of our children and taught by the wisdom of our Elders. The program is designed for Alaska Native families, but we welcome all individuals. We encourage self-referrals and accept referrals from the Office of Children Services, Probation/Parole, Mental Health/Alcohol Programs, Tribal Councils, FASAP, public defenders, and the court system.

The Adult Rehabilitation Center is rooted in a long history of fighting addiction. For over 100 years The Salvation Army has been fighting alcoholism in its 119 United States based adult rehabilitation centers (ARC). This ministry began in 1865 when William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army, opened shelters for homeless people on the streets of England. During this time many homeless people were also alcoholics, and it was in these shelters that the ARC ministry began. By the 1940s Americaarpn ARCs were developing a more professional counseling program, and in the 1950s ARCs hired professional social workers and psychologists as permanent staff. Today, ARC ministries extend to those suffering from alcoholism as well as multiple drug addictions. The Salvation Army's ARC ministry is totally self-supporting, receiving no government funding. In order to support the ministry, The Salvation Army takes discarded items that people donate, recycles them and then sells them in Salvation Army thrift stores. Salvation Army ARC ministries in the United States provide housing, clothing, medical attention and educational aid to men who are seeking help for a drug or alcohol addiction. The ARC focuses recovery around the spiritual fulfillment that comes through a personal relationship with Christ, offering a variety of programs that practically accent this spiritual ideal.

Leonard and Henrietta Nugen opened Nugen's Ranch in 1981, with the support of a visionary Board of Directors. Their views on the successfull treatment of long-term alcoholism, since then, have provided blueprints for sober living for people throughout Alaska. Nugen's Ranch became the first long-term treatment program in Alaska to receive national accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitaion Facilities (CARF) in 1993. Karen Nugen-Logan, daughter of the founders, was named Executive Director in 1994. Her appointment created a second generation of Nugen-based philosophy - training and education balanced with the cold reality of experience with addiction behaviors. Employed by the Ranch since 1985, Karen Nugen-Logan has guided the Ranch's operations into a new century. Today Nugen's Ranch serves adult men and women who have abused alcohol and drugs. The beautiful Matanuska-Susitna Valley setting, daily Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings, NA meetings, farm activities, work therapy, individual and small group counseling combine to create a supportive low-key family atmosphere.
