Description: Ho‘omau Ke Ola (HKO) is a private, non-profit, Hawaiian culture-based drug treatment program located in Wai‘anae Hawai‘i. HKO is part of an organizational continuum of care that serves the needs of Native Hawaiians, homeless individuals, and others in substance abuse recovery. Our mission is to provide treatment and promote healing from the harmful effects of chemical dependency in an environment integrating best practices and Hawaiian spiritual values. Our goal is not only to return each client back to their family and community free from the debilitating dependency on alcohol and other drugs but also to instill values and practices that will enable our clients to live a pono (balanced, righteous) life and to become a contributing member of society.

Description: Ho‘omau Ke Ola’s highest level of care is found in its residential treatment program, which offers structured programming from wake up to lights out. This level of care offers residents a safe, stable, serene, and distraction-free environment in which to begin their road to recovery. Time spent in this environment is filled with both Western Best Practice curriculum and Cultural curriculum. Western curriculum include: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), trauma-informed care, social skills training, 12-step familiarization classes, smoking cessation classes, health and nutrition classes, physical recreation opportunities, gender specific process groups, cinema therapy, financial literacy and several other living skills classes. We have three counselors trained to provide the cognitive behavioral intervention for criminogenic behavior recommended by the Interagency Council on Intermediate Sanctions (ICIS). Cultural curriculum offered at HKO include: kūkulu kumuhana (statement of purpose), moʻokuaauhau (geneology), ʻoli (chanting), ka huakaʻi (migration), moʻolelo (storytelling), ʻike hana lima (craftmanship), paʻani kahiko (ancient games), hoe ka waʻa (canoe Ppaddling), hula basics to teach precision, self-discipline, perseverance, and spiritual connection, ohana day, mālama ʻāina in the loi, and Native Hawaiian crafting. A client’s length of stay is determined by their progression through levels of awareness, acceptance, willingness, and commitment. Average length of stay is two (2) months. Parties Responsible for Residential Program include State Department of Health-Alcohol and Drug Addiction Division, HUD (Housing and Urban Development) homeless grant through the City and County of Honolulu, and Family Drug Court and Hawai‘i Judiciary’s Adult Client Services, as well as any self-pay consumers.
Kalihi Ymca Outreach Services - Adolescent School-based Services (nanakuli High School)

Description: Through funding received from the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD), the Kalihi YMCA Outreach Services provides a school-based substance abuse treatment program. Services are provided to youth attending the following high schools and middle schools: Kailua, Kaimuki, Roosevelt, McKinley, Farrington, Aiea, Moanalua, Waipahu, Campbell, Leilehua, Waialua, Kapolei, Nanakuli and Waianae High Schools; and Ilima, Waialua, Wahiawa, Jarrett, Dole, Central, Kalakaua, Kawananakoa, Stevenson, Aiea, Moanalua, Kapolei, Waipahu and Nanakuli Middle Schools. Youth participate in outpatient substance abuse treatment services. Participants receive between one (1) and eight (8) hours of direct service each week. Youth enrollment is voluntary and services are available to youth who are willing to acknowledge and address the problems they experience that are related to their use of alcohol and other drugs. The program goals are abstinence, learning life skills and developing an awareness of how substance use affects their lives. Services include individual/group sessions focusing on substance abuse education, social and life skills, relapse prevention and recreational activities. Counselors conduct follow-up contacts to determine youth's progress at 3 and 6 months after discharge from the program.
