Description: New Advances for People with Disabilities is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) California corporation. It is governed by a volunteer board of directors drawn from a pool of interested community members, parents of our clientele, and local business leaders. The Genesis Chemical Dependency Program is designed to treat individuals with alcohol and drug abuse problems that affect their physical, psychological, social and occupational functioning. Additionally, the program is designed to meet the needs of a variety of special populations, i.e., individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, and enable them to lead productive and chemical-free lives. Generally, the program operates in two phases over a one-year period: an intensive phase, 3 times per week for at least 4 months; and a maintenance phase, 1 time per week for at least 8 months. One-on-one counseling is provided on an out-patient basis, along with experiential groups,family education and support. Each client receives an assessment and an Individual Recovery Plan is designed specifically for their needs. Daytime and evening counseling sessions are offered throughout Kern County. Transportation is provided when necessary.

Treatment stays very depending on funding sources from 45 days to 120 days. It is a busy time, with classes 4 times daily on weekdays. Clients also attend 12-step meetings almost daily with their fellow clients. All of our programs are 12-Step based, social model programs that emphasize accountability and individual responsibility. Clients study the 12-Step program pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous and now used by Narcotics Anonymous and other groups, with special emphasis on the first four steps. Clients attend daily meetings, find 12-Step sponsors and build strong 12-Step support groups.
